Alright alright I said I wasn't going to do a full review on this one, and I'm not. What I'm going to do instead is give my thoughts on some of the stuff that happens and why I liked it. FULL SPOILERS.
- I like that this whole trilogy ends up being kind of an origin story for this version of Spiderman. I like that the new status quo at the end of his third movie is that no one knows who he is, he has no more Stark tech, he lives in a shitty apartment, and he uses a new homemade suit. That's a cool progression, and it sets up a much more classic version of Spidey going forward.
- Willem Defoe steals the whole damn show in this movie, my lord did they make the Goblin a menace.
- I like that this movie goes out of its way to remind us that Andrew Garfield was not the problem with the 'Amazing' movies. He is as charismatic and likeable as any other Spiderman in this movie, and his little redemption moment with MJ was great. I kinda hope we get another movie with him (just write the damn thing better this time).
- I loooooove that Peter wins a fight against Dr. Strange by being clever. I like that we get to see all three Peter's use their brains to solve problems.
- I appreciate Peter choosing to defy Strange, trying to save the movies villains, that's a very Peter Parker thing to do. I also like that this leads to his greatest challenge: Saving a villain who wronged him so personally. That's very Spiderman.
- There's a climactic moment in this movie that I thought was going to be ruined by reiterating dialogue but instead the characters silently look at each other and the message is 100% clear. Thank you for not assuming your audience is dumb.
- The fan service in this movie is very tastefully done. In what could have been two and a half hours of pure fan service, I appreciate that they actually showed restraint. The meta joke about Garfield's Spiderman not thinking he's all that great was a cute touch.
