The Best Stuff of 2023

Time to wrap the year up with a list of all that was good and great in 2023. Keep in mind that the content of this article may not necessarily be from the year 2023, it's just stuff that I enjoyed this year.

Disclaimer***: I have not watched Godzilla Minus One, nor have I played Bladurs Gate 3 just yet. Assume both of these would have made it to my list.

RRR:

This. movie. KICKS. ASS. I haven't felt this much outright joy watching a film since Knives Out premiered back in 2019. RRR rides all the way to the very edge of acceptable absurdity, and it does so on a motorcycle that's on fire and being chased by a tiger, while blasting the hardest Tollywood music you've ever heard. If you have 3 hours to spare and you just wanna have a good time, this is it.

Spiderman - Across the Spiderverse:

Imagine making the best Spiderman movie twice in a row. Following up on the absolutley incredible 'Into the Spiderverse', Christopher Miller, Phil Lord, and the Sony animation team continue to knock it out of the park, building their sequel on boundary-pushing visuals and a true understanding of who Spiderman is as a character. I don't even know how to sum up all of my feelings about this film succinctly, it's just perfect from head to toe.

Dungeons and Dragons - Honor Among Thieves:

While not necessarilly the most amazing film I saw all year, D&D encapsulates everything a good blockbuster should be. Namely, fun. This movie is a straight up good time. The whole cast is charismatic as hell, the amount of practical effects is refreshing, the jokes are legitimately hilarious, and the references to actual D&D had me grinning from ear to ear.

The Menu:

I watched this for the second time in 2023 and if you haven't seen this yet, what are you waiting for?! A darkly hilarious movie in which Ralph Fiennes gets to show us his creepy side as a world renowned chef bent on killing his clientel, lampooning some hilarious charicatures of the worst people you'd never want to meet.

Inglorious Basterds:

Yeah I know this movie is over ten years old but it's never a bad time to remind everyone that this is Tarantino's best work.

Warhammer 40000 - Darktide:

While Darktide officially released in late 2022, the game has come a long way in the past few months, and can now be considered one of the better co-op games on the market. With viscerally satisfying gameplay, plenty of variety in how you can choose to play, and one of the most BANGIN video game soundtracks ever composed (by the great Jesper Kyd), this isn't one to miss.

Cyberpunk 2077:

Yes, this game came out in 2020, and yes, it had a very, very rough launch depending on what platform you played it, but 2023 was the year of Cyberpunk. I already like this game when it came out, but the massive overhauls and new content drops added by CDPR in 2023 have turned Cyberpunk from a solid RPG to one of my favorite games of all time.

Honorable Mentions:

Marvel's Spiderman 2: It was good. It was never gonna win game of the year, but it's perfectly good.

Monarch - Legacy of Monsters: This is still wrapping up so no official placing yet, but this show is a lot of fun so far.

Ahsoka: Look this show was really good, but it didn't leave that much of a lasting impression on me. Not like Andor.
